Editorial Rules
We build on top of the principle of least surprise.
1. We use US spelling for English - it's the global default.
Examples:
"color", not "colour".
"organize", not "organise".
2. Logical quotation marks.
Example:
"Good morning", he said.
Not:
"Good morning," he said.
3. We use the Oxford comma. It's usually clearer.
Example:
"I admire my parents, Gandhi, and Mother Teresa."
Not:
"I admire my parents, Gandhi and Mother Teresa."
4. We spell out numbers unless used in an equation.
Example:
"I had to write out 9*9 one hundred and eighty-five times to remember it!"
Rules on hyphenation:
- Always hyphenate compound numbers between twenty-one and ninety-nine (this does not include numbers ending with 0).
- If you need to write out numbers higher than ninety-nine, do not use a hyphen; use “and” instead.
5. We don't use footnotes or parenthetical referencing.
